Gregg Popovich went to SD to meet Leonard, report says

The two had a "good" conversation and "more dialogue" is expected, Jabari Young of the San Antonio Express-News reports.

The saga reached its apex last week as multiple outlets reported that Leonard had indicated to the Spurs that he prefers to be traded rather than continue playing for the team that traded for him during the 2011 draft and hoped to build around him in the wake of Tim Duncan's retirement in 2016. Part of the reason why better offers have seemingly not been made is likely because many around the National Basketball Association believe that Leonard has already chose to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers next summer when his contract ends.

Leonard had told confidants that he did not want to sit down with Popovich and has been purposely hard for the Spurs to reach recently.

Compared to the other offers that are reportedly on the table, it seems that the Cavs may be offering the best deal for Leonard now. ESPN reports Popovich has tried to set up a meeting for weeks.

I understand the risk with him being traded to another team, enjoying his time there and signing an extension, but I value building a team instead of depleting a roster for one star, especially given how the National Basketball Association is moving toward strong teams over one- or two-man teams.

The Spurs are unlikely to be motivated to trade Leonard to the Lakers. Leonard, who has one year left on his contract, is eligible to sign a five-year $219 million super max deal with the Spurs this Summer, but it has become clear he has no interest in doing so.

So Leonard can push for a trade to the Lakers, but he may not get it. It has been reported that a fallout between Leonard's camp and the Spurs took place this season with Leonard feeling there was a misdiagnosis of the severity of his quad injury, among other things like expanding his brand, something he doesn't see as plausible in San Antonio.
