A Venezuelan flag flies on top of a building in Caracas, Venezuela, on Friday, June 15, 2018.

The detonation set off a stampede, with more than 500 people rushing for the exits of the Los Cotorros club in the middle-class neighbourhood of El Paraiso.

Numerous victims are said to have suffocated. It is still unknown how the other six people died, Villanueva told Reuters. At least five people were hurt in the incident and taken to hospital for treatment.

Witnesses said a minor, one of seven people detained in the incident, is suspected of setting off the tear gas.

The AP reported that the owner of the club has also been arrested, as well as the person who supposedly set off the tear gas device.

Caracas is one of the most violent capitals in the world and the country is engulfed in a deepening economic crisis that has forced hundreds of thousands to flee.

"The U.S. Department of State has assessed Caracas as being a CRITICAL-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests", the report states.

There were nearly 27,000 violent deaths previous year, making Venezuela proportionally the world's second most murderous nation after El Salvador, according to a local crime monitoring group.
