A vehicle carrying undocumented immigrants flipped Sunday, ejecting 12 people and killing at least five in south Texas, Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd said.

Four people died at the scene and a fifth died later, KSAT 12 television of San Antonio reported.

Boyd credited "good police work" for the reason why deputies started pursuing the vehicle adding that Boyd said human smuggling was a "real problem" in the area.

This article be updated as more details become available. Six patients were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio, Lt. Edwin Roberts said.

There were 14 people in the vehicle.

BEARING WITNESS

The sheriff confirmed to local news outlets that the vehicle flipped and ejected several people at end of a high-speed auto chase with U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Most of the occupants were believed to be living in the country without legal permission. The passenger who was not ejected from the vehicle also was believed to be an American citizen, and in custody.

A criminal complaint said the driver in that case admitted to investigators that he traveled from Laredo to San Antonio. Border Patrol agents stopped two of the vehicles and made multiple arrests, but the third vehicle continued, the statement said. "I think we need a wall in my opinion". The driver was among those hospitalized, and a deputy who assisted the Border Patrol with the chase found the driver sitting upright in his seat and took him and the passenger into custody.

The vehicle was carrying undocumented immigrants, though how exactly many is unclear.

The sheriff said he hadn't spoken to Border Patrol on the exact cause of the pursuit and nature of the crash.
