  • Second deputy dies in shooting in Kansas

Two Wyandotte County sheriff's deputies who were mortally wounded Friday while transporting an inmate were hailed Saturday as heroes who sacrificed their lives in service to public safety.

The deputies were shot on Friday after a suspect overpowered at least one of them and perhaps took a weapon, said Major Kelli Bailiff of the Wyandotte Sheriff's Department said during a press conference.

Officials identified the deputies that died in the shooting as Patrick Rohrer, 35, and Theresa King, 44.

In a statement, David Alvey, mayor of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, said the city is saddened by the "senseless shootings" of the deputies. Police say she died just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The inmate was also shot, and Zeigler said the last he heard, he was in stable condition.

Bailiff said a credit union fund will be set up soon for people to donate to help the families of the slain deputies, and that information will be provided publicly later.

Police Officer Zac Blair said authorities are reviewing surveillance video. Video from the scene shows the courthouse surrounded by yellow police tape, several police vehicles parked in the street and numerous uniformed law enforcement officers walking the grounds. Kansas City Police Capt. Robert Melton, 46, was gunned down while chasing suspects of a drive-by shooting on July 19, 2016.

Bailiff said the incident occurred in a "caged" area outside a courthouse and there was no danger to the community.

'Our hearts break for our brothers and sisters at Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office as well as for the loved ones of the deputies shot today, one of whom has died. They didn't give any details Saturday as to his condition.

The shooting happened before 11:20 a.m. Friday.

Kansas City Police Det. Kansas City detective Brad Lancaster was shot during a pursuit in May 2016.

The year before, Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Wood was shot at a convenience store but survived.
