  • Putin Xi Beijing meeting underscores close relationship

Theresa May's tough line on Russian Federation has been undermined by US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte who have suggested that Vladimir Putin should be readmitted to the group of world leaders.

Both Trump and Conte were clear that they want Russian Federation to be readmitted to the Group, despite Moscow's refusal to withdraw its occupation forces from Crimea - which it forcibly annexed from Ukraine in 2014 - and eastern Ukraine, where Russia's armed forces and their local proxies continue to fight a war that has killed almost 11,000 people in just over four years.

"The president of the United States has repeatedly said that he considers this meeting expedient", he said, "and I agree that this is indeed the case".

Putin responded: 'It wasn't us who left.

"As for Russia's return to the G7, or G8: we did not leave it".

"One risk is that others will take advantage of this apparent vacuum in American leadership and the lack of trans-Atlantic consensus and act in ways that will harm trans-Atlantic interests, whether it's Russian Federation in the Eurasia. or China in Asia", said Ian Lesser, of the German Marshall Fund.

Peter Navarro tells "Fox News Sunday" that's what Trudeau did to Trump at the end of the Group of Seven nations meeting in Canada over the weekend.

"You'll have to ask Obama, because he was the one that let Crimea get away", he said when asked about the annexation. "It is a celebration of outstanding Russian citizens and recognition of their services to the Motherland", Putin said at the awarding ceremony. "He is a thug using Soviet-style aggression to wage a shadow war against America, and our leaders should act like it".

Tweeting in English, Macron stressed: "No leader is eternal".

The last meeting between Trump and Putin was a brief exchange in Vietnam last November. In a series of tweets from Singapore, Trump kept up the tirade while contending that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal".

The White House announced an early exit from the summit Thursday night after French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signalled they would use the G7 event to take a stance against new USA tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

It also calls for co-ordinated attribution of hostile activity so more countries name and shame perpetrators of cyber attacks and other abuses.

Nearly immediately after US President Donald J. Trump caused a major rift in the Euro-Atlantic alliance by castigating his closest allies in the UK, Canada, and Germany by refusing to endorse a communique that called for an worldwide, rules-based trade regime, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte joined Trump in further infuriating the Western alliance by for Russia's return to the global forum.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who was fiercely critical of Trump as recently as Thursday in Ottawa, posted a video of his meeting with the president on Friday that contained a caption out of a Hallmark greeting card. The president told reporters, "They have no choice". He said the Chinese president was the only state leader to have celebrated his birthday with him, with the pair sharing a drink and sausage.

But what has changed since Russia's ouster is Trump's election.

Today, June 12, 2018, President Donald Trump meets with North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

As he prepared to travel to Canada, he ramped up his blast of Canada on Twitter this morning over what he says are unfair trade practices as the US president prepares to make his Canadian debut later today.

"We both think that trade protection is rising now and the global economic recovery faces unsteady, uncertain factors", Xi said.

Ahead of Trump's arrival, French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted suggesting the worldwide group could issue a communique at the end of the summit that leaves out the United States.

Little of that tension was on display when the cameras entered the rooms of the summit, however.

Investors are also concerned about the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump has threatened to terminate.

Canada was swift to reject the idea.

A senior UK Government source said despite Mr Trump's comments "the Americans have been very clear in negotiating they are signed up to the rapid response mechanism".
