Trump Seeks To Punish Canada Until He Gets What He Wants

  • President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained in recent days about Canadian tariffs on dairy products

That was the message Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump continued to take personal shots at Justin Trudeau, blasted Canada's dairy industry and threatened to make Canadians pay for the prime minister's alleged effrontery.

Before the apology, some USA lawmakers on Tuesday questioned the strong language the White House and Trump have used toward Canada in contrast to the praise he gave North Korea at Tuesday's summit in Singapore.

This year's annual G7 summit was marked by tensions and harsh words exchanged between President Donald Trump and other world leaders over trade.

Trump said he chose to back out of the G7 communique after watching Trudeau's closing summit news conference, at which he warned that Canada would not be pushed around on tariffs - a point the Canadian prime minister had made several times before.

A senior aide to US President Donald Trump apologized Tuesday for saying there was a "special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, following the acrimonious Group of Seven summit.

"Justin probably didn't know that Air Force has about 20 televisions", Trump said.

But today he apologized for using language that counteracted his goal of sending a signal of strength.

Mr Navarro reportedly said on Tuesday his remarks were a mistake and his language was inappropriate.

"I see (on) the television that he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States". He reacted to Trudeau's remarks by withdrawing the USA from a G7 communique and criticising the prime minister fiercely by tweet.

The horror! Who could have predicted that when Trump imposed steel and aluminum tariffs against Canada - citing national security concerns - the Canadians wouldn't be happy and might strike back? -Canada relationship in nothing but positive terms.

"I actually like Justin", Trump said.

In contrast, Trump was mostly smiles with North Korea's Kim Jong Un on Monday, and said talks between them were "top-of-the-line".

"In the short term, we quarrel from time to time and certainly this is one of those quarrelsome moments", Tousignant said, recalling that Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the current prime minister's late father, had his own issues in 1971 with then-president Richard Nixon, who famously referred to the elder Trudeau as an "asshole". The country has rallied together, with public opinion polling showing there's wide support for Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the steel and aluminum duties that will kick in for some US goods on July 1.

As well, she said the government should accelerate work on its Plan B in the event that Trump blows up NAFTA or follows through on threats to impose tariffs on autos and auto parts - a move Ambrose said would be devastating to Canada's economy. Canada has signed a trade deal with the European Union and is part of the Trans Pacific Partnership, a deal Trudeau helped salvage after Trump jettisoned it upon taking power. "We look forward to looking at the details of the agreement".
