  • FRANK GUNN THE CANADIAN PRESS FILESIn his writing and on his TV shows chef Anthony Bourdain seemed to have an appetite for life that made his death by suicide come as a shock to fans

Extensive suicide prevention efforts have kept rates of suicide deaths relatively low in CT, but the numbers have still increased steadily since 1999, particularly among middle-aged people, state and federal statistics show.

Guns were the most common method used for suicide, accounting for nearly half of the people who died.

Overall, the rate rose to 15.4 per 100,000 in 2014-2016 from 12.3 per 100,000 in 1999-2001. She added that intentionality is hard to determine in cases in which a person dies by overdose.

Suicide is rarely caused by a single factor.

The funding from federal sources helps, though much of it is aimed at teenagers and adolescents while funds for suicide prevention specifically in older adults - who have been dying by suicide at increasing rates since the 1990s - are rare. That compares to 69 percent and 41 percent, respectively, among those with known mental health conditions. The most important takeaway, mental health professionals say, is that suicide is not only an issue for the mentally ill but for anyone struggling with serious lifestyle issues. The state of North Dakota had the highest increase.

"We don't have all the answers". When it comes to mental health issues, experts say it's not something you can always see.

The rate of suicide deaths has been rising across the USA since at least 1999, according to new data released Thursday.

Abby Litovski is over the center's crisis and suicide line program and says since news of the suicides came out, they have certainly gotten an increase in calls this week. In 2015, more than 78% of those global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries.

Veterans are also "overrepresented" in the report, she said.

"So we get concerned with celebrity suicides because when there's lots of attention and lots of specific reporting about it in a sensational way people may be more likely to identify with that person", he said. Still, the researchers found a 10% higher risk of suicide among people who had served in the military. "We know that same approach can work with suicide".

"We think a key message is, there's not just one group; many are at risk", Schuchat said.

On Friday, the nonprofit Mental Health America released a written statement from Paul Gionfriddo, its president and CEO, in response to the high-profile deaths of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade.

APA CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin added that the situation highlighted the need for enforcement of recently passed laws related to mental health. "Especially in our rural areas, it's of great concern".
