Kindergarten Class' Lockdown Nursery Rhyme Sparks Outrage on Twitter

  • This is the horrifying nursery rhyme American five-year-olds are taught to survive school shootings

The picture surfaced on Twitter, with a song to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle hanging up for a kindergarten class.

She added, "The school is doing exactly what they need to be doing, and I'm glad for it".

The song has haunted the nation and beyond, with the post receiving more than 65,000 likes, 30,000 retweets and 2500 comments, as well as global media coverage. When ask what that was, she said "in case a bad man comes to our school we have to help Mrs.M push her desk in front of the door, get in the closet, hold hands & be VERY quiet!"

One child's parent, Georgy Cohen, first spotted the song on the wall on a tour of the school.

A tour of Kindergarten classes quickly turned dark after a MA mother came across a particularly morbid nursery rhyme that soundtracks lockdown preparations for young students.

"It's jarring", Cohen, a MA resident, told The Boston Globe on Thursday. She said she and her classmates were huddled in a corner, scared they were going to die.

Social media users are calling the poster simply heartbreaking.

Superintendent Mary Skipper said that this is, unfortunately, "the world we live in" and regrets the "loss of innocence".

But practicing how to survive a school shooting is now also a part of everyday life for some 4- to 5-year-old pupils. She found a nursery rhyme taped to the blackboard that presented the basic instructions of what the children need to do in an active shooter situation in a cutesy, nursery rhyme-style song.

"To be shocked by it is important", she told The Globe. "To see that absurdity and horror and have that sick feeling in your stomach is important", she said. In the wake of the Parkland school shooting that left 17 people dead, there has been widespread discussions about lockdown drills that have become increasingly common in the wake of school shootings such as Columbine in 1999 and Sandy Hook in 2012.

There have been more than 20 school shootings this year alone.

Officials went on to say that lockdowns are jarring and students know how unnatural the experience is, the Post said.
