  • Ryan Gosling portrays American icon Neil Armstrong in the decade leading up to his 1969 moon landing in the first trailer for the upcoming biopic First Man

So far, the Best Picture race appears to be MAJOR SLIM PICKENS so First Man will be like that first hunk of meat thrown to starving lions.

Fans received their first look at the clip during Friday night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Starring Ryan Gosling as Armstrong and Claire Foy (The Crown) as his wife Janet Shearon, First Man tells the story of NASA's mission to put a man on the moon.

The film shows everything experienced by Armstrong from his days of training for the unsafe mission, to how it affected his family life, right through to the actual experience of the journey. Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash) directs from a script by Josh Singer (Spotlight), based on an earlier screenplay by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and the original book by James R. Hansen. Mowgli, Aviron's Serenity and Annapurna's Where'd You Go, Bernadette?

Chazelle's filmmaking talents, accompanied by Gosling and Foy's acting chops, are sure to make First Man a memorable, visceral account of one of the most iconic moments in USA history - and a top contender come awards season. Neil Armstrong faces questions from politicians, and is even asked by his son, "Do you think you're coming back?"

First Man hits theaters October 12, 2018. The film also stars Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Patrick Fugit, Ciaran Hinds, Ethan Embry, Shea Whigham, Corey Stoll, and Pablo Schreiber.
