Queen Maxima, who was born in Argentina, was "very shocked and very sad" to learn about her sister's death, according to the royal house.

Dutch Princess Ariane is carried by the sister of Queen Maxima to her baptism ceremony in the Kloosterkerk in The Hague on October 20, 2007.

Dutch state-run news agency RVD said the queen was "very shocked and very upset by the news". A spokesman for the Netherlands Government Information Service told Dutch media that Zorreguieta was believed to have died in a suicide.

Investigating prosecutors in Argentina said that Zorreguieta was found dead on Wednesday evening by her mother and a friend, who called 911.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte wished the Queen and her family, "all the strength needed to carry this terrible loss". "I wish them all the strength necessary to carry this terrible loss together and I trust that they will get the peace and space for that".

Inés Zorreguieta, 33, who worked as a researcher at the United Nations in Panama and was also a talented guitarist, was reported to have taken her own life by Argentinian and Dutch media.

Ms Zorreguieta studied psychology at a university in Argentina and worked for the government there as an official in the Ministry of Social Development.

Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie expressed his condolences to Queen Maxima on behalf of Argentina. King Willem-Alexander will travel alone to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Her death comes 10 months after the death of Maxima's father Jorge Zorreguieta, who died at the age of 89 from cancer.

His past caused some controversy in the Netherlands, and prompted a debate in the Dutch parliament ahead of his daughter's marriage to the crown prince.
