In Chennai, Rajini fans offered milk to the poster of the 67-year-old actor and burst crackers before gathering in large numbers to watch the film in theatres. This is the second collaboration of Rajinikanth with director Ranjith Pa after Kabali.
Rajinikanth fans can now watch the megastar's latest film, Kaala, in Karnataka.
Pro-Kannada workers protest outside Balaji theatre in Bengaluru where Rajinikanth's movie Kaala is screening, on June 7, 2018. The film is facing a "ban" in the state over Rajinikanth's remarks on the controversial issue of sharing of Cauvery river water between the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. How much this has affected the film's opening, I don't know.
Besides the original Tamil version, the film has been released across the country and beyond with sub-titles in Hindi, Telugu and English. "The list of theatres will later be sent to the police commissioner to ensure security at these theatres", Srinivas said. Even before the release of "Kaala", reports of a third film by the duo have already started doing the rounds. It might take another Superstar film to beat this remarkable feat. Our honour and Kannada pride are at stake.
Rajinikanth's "Kaala" tells the story of a slumlord in Mumbai's Dharavi slum who fights for the rights of oppressed Tamils and takes on a politician. Produced by Rajinikanth's son-in-law Dhanush under his banner "Wunderbar Films", the film has an enviable supporting cast in Nana Patekar, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Huma Qureshi and Easwari Rao.
Sources at Chennai theatres say the film has found pre-bookings only for two days, which is extremely unusual for a Rajinikanth film. In fact, the Chief Minister of Karnataka HD Kumaraswamy also went on the record saying that it was not advisable to release "Kaala" in the state following stiff protests. Kabali is said to have earned more than 10 crores in Karnataka alone. Reports also said that the distributor's office in Karnataka was attacked.
