Trump falsely accuses Canada of burning down White House

CNN reported that, during a call with Trudeau, Trump referred to the burning of the White House during the War of 1812 after Trudeau asked about new USA tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Francis Scott Key composed the words as the British bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore from warships, according to the White House Historical Association.

Some people might think the War of 1812 inspired the famous "1812 Overture" by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

"Canada's position is and always has been that the trilateral approach is actually better for Canada, Mexico and the United States".

U.S. President Donald Trump accused Canada of burning down the White House during what is being termed a testy phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, media reported Wednesday. In a tweet the next morning, he mused about shutting Canadian wood products out of America.

In retaliation for the US tariffs, Canada has proposed a $16.6-billion tariff package on common Canadian imports from the United States, including beer kegs, appliances and decorative candles.

Mr. Trump was notably more muted in his treatment of Mexico and the European Union, even as they announced similar retaliations.

The EU and Canada were originally shielded from the aluminum and steel tariffs, but Trump ended that exemption last week.

"Trump thought Canada was going to be the easiest country to play, and he's disappointed that didn't happen", said Dunniella Kaufman, a Canadian trade lawyer based in Washington.

Justin Trudeau said NAFTA, which was signed between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. is actually better for the three nations.

"It is simply ridiculous to view any trade with Canada as a national security threat to the US", Mr Trudeau has said of the move.

At a White House meeting in February, Mr. Trump complained that Canada was "very smooth" at taking the U.S.'s money in unfair trade deals. The United States wanted free trade with Europe, but Britain was vehemently opposed to that.

Christopher Sands, director of the Center for Canadian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, said Mr. Trump was particularly rankled by Ottawa's NAFTA outreach campaign, during which Canadian politicians and businesspeople fanned out across the country to encourage their American counterparts to lobby the White House to preserve NAFTA.

"I think it's fair to expect that any discussions on the global economy.in the current environment will quickly turn into a discussion about trade", a senior Canadian official said. "The impact on Canada and ultimately on workers in the US won't be a laughing matter". "This is an unusual step", he said. Under that principle, British officers would board USA vessels and force (often former) British sailors to work for them instead, which resulted in the 1807 USS Chesapeake incident in which three American sailors were killed and 16 wounded.

The reference itself is not entirely historically accurate. The raid, made in revenge for the American burning of York - present-day Toronto - the previous year, saw the British briefly capture and set fire to the USA capital.

"Trump's trying to fix this broken system", the President's top economic adviser Mr Larry Kudlow told journalists at the White House on Wednesday. But after rebelling against the British, the United States was suddenly on its own, as it faced trade restrictions by both the British and the French who were fighting each other in the Napoleonic wars at the time.
