Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the world Tuesday to do more to tackle plastic pollution and other environmental issues. "Together, let us ensure that our future generations live in a clean and green planet, in harmony with nature".

Sade Nubi, a Senior Environmental Engineer with the Department of Works and Physical Planning, said that the event involved a walk for the environment and a presentation on beating plastic pollution on campus.

Ikpeazu said that the usage of plastics could result in serious health consequences because it contained properties that were harmful to human health and the environment.

He said "several countries such as Eritrea, China, Rwanda, Mauritania, Morocco and Kenya have outlawed the use of plastic bags; while England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, South Africa, among others have placed a fee on the use of plastic bags". The aim of the theme is to reduce the use of plastic.

"Plastic now threatens to become a menace to humanity".

Millions of people from over 100 countries including Brunei Darussalam have taken part over the years, helping drive change in consumption habits as well as in national and worldwide environmental policy.

Gujarat has also launched "Plastic-waste free Gujarat" drive on June 5.

The World Environment Day is observed on June 5 every year as a platform for encouraging awareness and propagating the need for protecting the environment.

"Every year, 500 billion plastic bags are used around the world, 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean and 17 million barrels of oil are used on plastic production".

A Roadmap for Sustainability, said while government regulation on the use of plastic has made some impact on reducing waste, it is not enough, and more urgent action is needed.

This day was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) 45 years ago and it has adopted a different, or at least rotating, theme each year.

Mr Modi said, Government's Make in India campaign has focus on zero defect and zero effect manufacturing which means manufacturing without defect and which does not harm the environment.

The Secretary-General is participating in the #BeatPlasticPollution challenge, in which users pledged to replace single-use plastics with reusable alternatives. "In order to create value for plastics we need to look at feasible buy-back schemes, better support of private sector recycling initiatives and innovative ways to incorporate the informal sector into the value chain", she said.
