Microsoft has acquired GitHub

  • MIcrosoft buy GitHub

Co-founder Chris Wanstrath left the company back in August, and Chief Business Officer Julio Avalos has been in charge of day-to-day matters in the interim. While those talks may have died down, the possible inclusion of Ramaswamy to the company's board may curb Microsoft's prospects for a buyout.

It looks like GitHub will be added to the list, giving Microsoft an edge in open-source development. GitHub was last valued in 2015 at $2 billion.

Microsoft is contemplating a full acquisition of the popular code repository, GitHub. It has been struggling to find a CEO after Wanstrath stepped down from the position. Sharing and reusing code, rather than rewriting code for the most basic tasks for each new project, has improved developer productivity in countless ways.

Business Insider has reported information from sources familiar with the companies involved that executives from Microsoft have been holding talks with GitHub officials in regard to potential acquisition. Many corporations, including Microsoft and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, use GitHub to store their corporate code and to collaborate. GitHub can be termed as the gold mine of talent, data, and resources. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had called open source "Cancer" in 2001.

Those fears might be overstated.

In the latest development, as per Bloomberg, Microsoft has actually agreed to buy the code hosting site.

Apparently, this isn't the first time that Microsoft has considered purchasing GitHub.

They can also use Gitlab, which quickly capitalized on developer angst Sunday with a live YouTube video explaining how to get up and running with its similar service, although less than 200 people were watching it when I joined about ten minutes after it got started. In the years following that performance, Apple stole the mobile computing show with iOS, and AWS won the hearts and minds of enterprise developers with its cloud services.
