Guatemala Volcano Eruption Kills At Least 25

  • Six dead or missing after Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts

The volcano, known to be one of Central America's most active, has destroyed homes and blanketed nearby villages in a cloud of heavy ash. "There are injured, burned and dead people", Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's Conred disaster agency, said on radio, according to the Guardian.

The fiery explosion sent large plumes of smoke and ash thousands of feet into the air - and "a river of lava" through El Rodeo village near Guatemala City, according to local officials.

At least another 20 people have been injured in the eruption, the second major one this year from the 3763 metre peak.

The Volcan del Fuego, roughly 27 miles from Guatemala City, shot ash almost four miles into the sky. Four people died as their house was set on fire and two children died watching the eruption from a nearby bridge. Locals, meanwhile, have shared dramatic photos and videos showing a massive ash column reaching to the sky.

A total of about 1.7 million people have been affected by the eruption, the Guatemalan government says. A massive stream of lava could also be seen running through the region.

Hundreds of people were injured when it exploded, spewing ash and molten rock for miles around.

"Currently the volcano continues to erupt and there exists a high potential for (pyroclastic) avalanches of debris", the disaster agency said late Sunday via Twitter, quoting Sanchez, the director of the seismology and volcanology institute.

The volcanic eruption on Sunday spewed a river of red, hot lava and belched thick clouds of smoke almost 10,000 metres above sea level, CNN quoted the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) as saying.

La Aurora International Airport was closed because of the threat to planes caused by the ash.

BBC News reports officials advised residents to wear masks as ash fell.

The dead were from farming communities just south of the volcano who were trapped by hot lava flow, National Disaster Relief Agency spokesman David de Leon told reporters.

A disaster authority spokesman said a change in wind direction was to blame for the volcanic ash falling on parts of the capital.
