Two lions, two tigers and a jaguar escape from German zoo

  • A massive hunt is under way for the five beasts

Andreas Kruppert, the mayor of the town of Arzfeld, said the confusion arose because volunteers using a drone were unable to find the carnivores, prompting fears they had all escaped the zoo in Luenebach, near Germany's borders with Luxembourg and Belgium.

Local residents were advised to stay in their homes and to call the police if they saw the animals.

The caution has come even though the escaped animals are still believed to be on the grounds of the zoo.

It is unclear what circumstances lead to the bear's death.

Authorities said that the mass breakout could have been caused after a river overflowed following heavy rainfall causing fences at the zoo to erode.

Eifel Zoo has nearly 400 animals of 60 exotic and native species, including lions, tigers, and other big cats on its 30-acre site.

One of the lions was shot dead and the other was eventually brought back into captivity.

The zoo opened in 1965 with dogs, donkeys and a wild boar, but has since expanded and is now home to 400 animals of 60 species, including Siberian tigers and lions, and sees around 70,000 people visit per year.

As it turned out, the cats had never left the sprawling 30-hectare Eifel Zoo in Luenebach, much of which was under water after huge thunderstorms overnight.

The visitor, a woman who wishes to remain anonymous, said that Lyka the lioness had been written off as a "breeding mistake" by the Maasin Zoo in Iloilo, southern Philippines, having gone blind after being born in 2013 with eyesight problems.
