  • Trump pardons Dinesh D’Souza, conservative agitator who pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud

President Donald Trump says he will pardon conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud.

D'Souza is the latest controversial right-wing figure to get a reprieve from the president.

Last week, Trump issued a posthumous pardon to Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion, who was sent to prison a century ago in a racially charged case.

Stewart served a five-month prison term for conspiracy and making false statements to federal investigators linked to an insider stock trading scheme.

He also said that he believed Blagojevich was treated "unfairly".

The democrat is now serving a 14-year prison sentence after being convicted on corruption charges related to a scheme to sell the Senate seat left vacant by then president-elect Barack Obama in 2008.

Trump told reporters that Blagojevich said something dumb but that "lots of politicians" do and thinks his sentence is excessive. Blagojevich was also a contestant on Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" reality television show in 2010.

Mumbai-born Mr. D'Souza, 57, is author of several New York Times bestsellers.

Mr. D'Souza also slammed Mr. Bharara in a series of tweets after he was pardoned and alleged that one Indian American had tried to destroy the career of another Indian American. "Dinesh was the subject of a political prosecution, brazenly targeted by the Obama administration bc of his political views".

A judge rejected that defense, calling it "all hat, no cattle". Critics were quick to note Trump was subverting prosecutions involving his nemesis, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey; Comey's lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, the former U.S. attorney in Chicago; and Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired past year as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY.

Watchdog groups criticized D'Souza's pardon, saying it signaled contempt for the rule of law. "That is what we did in this case and what we will continue to do".

D'Souza made the 2012 anti-Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America", which was given poor reviews by many critics, but has become one of the most successful political documentaries ever released, grossing more than $32 million.

D'Souza was sentenced to five years of probation for violating federal campaign law.

Mueller is reportedly investigating Stone's finances as part of the investigation into ties between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential campaign.

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood blasted Trump's pardon of D'Souza. Among the president's prior pardons are Arizona Sherriff Joe Arpaio and former Bush White House aide Scooter Libby.

Perhaps more pardons of Democrats could be in store.

He claimed his conviction, for which he also was fined $30,000, was a "vindictive political hit" by then-President Obama, who was angry over a movie he had made about him.

President Donald Trump has reportedly indicated that he is strongly considering commuting the sentence of imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
