  • External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj greets Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New Delhi on Monday

India will not accept sanctions imposed, or to be imposed, by the United States on Iran, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is in New Delhi to discuss the situation following the U.S. rejection of the nuclear accord and to find out about India's position on the matter.

Iranian Foreign Minister Dr Mohammad Javad Zarif, who arrived here on Monday on a one-day visit, stressed upon the idea of strengthening relations shared by the two countries.

Parties involved in the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) "should engage constructively for peaceful resolution of the issues that have arisen with respect to the agreement", it said.

The United States announced earlier this month that was abandoning the 2015 agreement and will by November reinstate tough and far-reaching US sanctions, which were lifted under the deal in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear activities.

Iran is India's third largest oil supplier and there were apprehensions about possible impact of the USA decision on India's oil imports.

The talks come against the backdrop of a USA law that imposes sanctions against Russian Federation and Iran.

"Our hope is that China and Iran will have close consultation on the basis of observing the deal and push forward the development of bilateral cooperation", Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Zhang Hanhui said at a briefing.

In a unilateral move on May 8, President Trump declared that he was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, unraveling the signature foreign policy achievement of his predecessor Barack Obama, and isolating United States from its Western allies.

Citing committee members, the report said that purchasing the Russian system would make it hard for the U.S. to share sensitive technology with India.

The influence of China on Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, considered a backyard of India, has been growing and it is seen as a concern in New Delhi.

As for Saarc minus Pakistan, she said the South Asian bloc would not remain a grouping if a country went out.

According to media reports, India may resume payments to Iran in rupees - to shield exporters from the US sanctions. While India may not be huge fans of Iran, they're extremely antagonistic towards Pakistan and that works out to be a win for them.

The Minister also said government has achieved unprecedented outreach and unparalleled outcome at the global stage in the last four years.
