Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Bill Richardson on the potential fallout from President Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

Trump's tariffs, which will comprise 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium, will be enacted at midnight (1 June) and will hit European Union exports valued at €6.4bn in 2017, as well as Canada and Mexico, after talks failed.

She called the USA measures illegal and counterproductive, and both she and Trudeau expressed how hard it is to imagine how Canada could ever be a national-security threat to an ally as close and important as the United States.

"We now call on the EU Commission to take swift and robust action to combat the indirect effects of these tariffs", he said. "This is not an action against them, it's simply an action to defend our industries as President Trump said he would".

He says the tariff created to protect the US industry is the wrong tool directed at the wrong place.

Ross himself heads to Beijing on Friday where he will attempt to get firm deals to export more USA goods in a bid to cut America's $375 billion trade deficit with China.

It prompted threats of retaliation from the European Union on United States products before the policy was abandoned.

The tariffs will impact directly on Port Talbot as around 10% of Tata Steel Europe's exports go to the US.

But the U.S.is pressing ahead nonetheless, a long-threatened tactic sure to cast a pall over the G7 summit Trudeau is hosting next week in Quebec.

Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, added that the U.S. tariffs are "protectionism, pure and simple".

"In the case of the United Kingdom, where we send steel to the United States that is vital for their businesses and their defence industry, it is patently absurd".

The US government is about to impose Canada with tariffs on its steel and aluminum imports.

President Donald Trump had announced in March to impose an import tariff of 25 percent on steel and 15 percent on aluminum, based on addressing the perceived threat to national security.

While not confirming directly that the U.S. would decide to impose tariffs, he said: "It's up to the European Union to decide if it wants to take retaliatory measures".

"This is dumb. Europe, Canada, and Mexico are not China, and you don't treat allies the same way you treat opponents", said Sen.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told French daily Le Figaro it would be announced either before markets opened or after they closed.

"This is protectionism, pure and simple", he said. "It's totally unacceptable that a country is imposing unilateral measures when it comes to world trade", said Junker, who threatened the European Union would soon issue "counterbalancing measures".

Employers in the other industries are going to have to pay more for materials, making their products costlier and less competitive.

The steel and aluminum levies and auto-import probe could play well with Trump voters in Rust Belt states in the lead-up to congressional midterms in November.

"Let me be clear: These tariffs are totally unacceptable", Trudeau said.
