  • North Korea-US summit on track, says Moon, after candid talks with 'friend' Kim Jong-un

While there was speculation that he then boarded a New York-bound China Air flight, there was no sign of him when the plane arrived at Kennedy Airport on Tuesday, reporters there said.

Kim and Trump's initial decision to meet followed months of war threats and insults between the leaders over the North's nuclear program. He says Russian Federation "will support it of course, and especially meaningful agreements to be reached there".

"Remember that when Trump came into office, it was great-power competition - with Russian Federation and China but mostly with China - that was going to be the priority and that was the focus of every national security document the new administration put out", says Harry Kazianis, director of defense studies and a Northeast Asia expert at the Center for the National Interest in Washington.

The meetings are expected to continue on Monday and Tuesday and are focused on the issue of North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, it said. They discussed their shared goal of achieving "the complete and permanent dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missile programs". According to TBS, it will be headed by the head of Committee of the State Council of the DPRK.

Kim, in a telling line from a dispatch issued by the North's state-run news service earlier Sunday, "expressed his fixed will on the historic (North Korea)-U.S. summit talks".

The State Department confirmed early Wednesday morning that Pompeo, who has been critical to Trump's North Korea negotiation efforts even prior to assuming the top diplomatic post, will depart for NY where he is scheduled to meet Kim through Thursday.

South Korea's presidential office said Moon will personally announce the outcome of Saturday's summit with Kim on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal quoted two USA administration officials as saying that Washington was readying a major new sanctions push against North Korea but could hold off on implementing it to avoid disrupting the delicate talks to revive the summit.

Diplomacy levels have accelerated ahead of a potential summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

President Donald Trump says negotiations over a potential summit with the leader of North Korea are "going along very well".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is greeted by senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, on his arrival in Pyongyang on May 9, 2018. He has had the summits with Moon and Xi, as well as two meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert added the secretary plans to make a two-day trip to NY starting Wednesday.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday there could be more impromptu talks and summits with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, as USA officials sought to revive what would be a historic meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim.

Trump tweeted, "We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea".

As Pompeo, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, met also with the North Korean leader during those two occasions, it is being closely watched if Kim Yong Chol will see Trump.

The North Korea Leadership Watch website described Kim Yong Chol as sarcastic, hard to work with, and somewhat independent because it said he is "not properly deferential to his superiors". Professor, thank you for coming in today.
