  • Tesla Autopilot crash in Laguna Beach

A Tesla Model S crashed into a parked police vehicle in Laguna Beach, California yesterday, becoming the latest in a string of accidents involving Tesla cars, whose drivers claim the auto was in Autopilot mode when they happened.

According to FOX40 sister station KTLA, the crash occurred along Laguna Canyon Road shortly after 11 a.m., Laguna Beach Police Department Sgt. Jim Cota tweeted. The Tesla driver sustained minor injuries, but declined transport to a hospital, the sergeant told the Los Angeles Times. The police SUV ended up with its two passenger-side wheels on a pavement.

We have yet to see the results of third-party crash tests for the Tesla Model 3, but some owner reports of accidents are giving some insights into the safety performance of the new electric vehicle.

Cota wrote that the vehicle had Tesla's semi-autonomous Autopilot feature activated when it crashed into a parked police department vehicle. Cota told the LA Times the "police vehicle is totalled".

Tesla says on its website the Autpilot function is designed 'to detect objects that the vehicle may impact and applies the brakes accordingly'.

"What's actually awesome about this accident is that a Model S hit a fire truck at 60mph (96 kmh) and the driver only broke an ankle".

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, has moaned about media attention on Tesla crashes, having recently tweeted: "It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the ~40,000 people who died in U.S. auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage".

Tesla has said the function is not created to avoid a collision and warns drivers not to rely on it entirely.

There have been a handful of crashes involving Teslas on autopilot. including a fatal incident in March of this year, and another in 2016.

In any case, that's four accidents involving Teslas since the start of the year, and another four last year.

While Tesla's Autopilot cameras do save images in the event of a crash, it's not something that is now available to owners, but Tesla is reportedly working on a dashcam feature using its Autopilot cameras.
