  • Paris Who is'le spiderman- the Malian immigrant who saved a toddler's life

The prosecutor in the case, François Molins, told BFM-TV that the father "took a long time to return home because he had made a decision to play the smartphone game Pokémon Go when he left the store".

According to French news agency AFP, the boy's father is being questioned by police for leaving his child unattended.

Amateur video footage shows 22-year-old Mamadou Gassama being cheered on by spectators as he, in a stunning display of heroism, pulled himself up from balcony-to-balcony to the building's fourth floor, where the child was dangerously hanging.

During a meeting in the Elysée presidential palace on Monday, Macron praised Gassama's heroic deed and promised him French citizenship.

His actions went viral on social media, where he was dubbed "Spiderman". Sounds like Gassama will be putting those scaling skills to good use.

Gassama told Macron: "I didn't think about it, I climbed up and God helped me". "I climbed up like that and, thank God, I saved the child", he said.

He personally thanked Mr Gassama, gave him a medal for courage and said he would also be offered a role in the fire service.

Gassama told France 24 that he was with his girlfriend when he saw a child on the fourth floor hanging from a balcony. "I wasn't thinking about being fearless". A man on the neighboring balcony emerges and leans around a partition to grasp the child. Macron said 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama would be rewarded for his "exceptional act" with papers to legalise his stay, citizenship if he wants and a job as a firefighter. Instead of watching the child, the father had reportedly been out grocery shopping and playing Pokémon Go.

Gassama recounted the chain of events on Saturday night to France's Le Parisien newspaper.

The 4-year-old was being looked after by his father in Paris while his mother was elsewhere.

The mother said her husband, who is in his 30s, was "shaken" by the incident.

"I did it because it was a child", the paper quoted him saying.

A government spokesperson said the country should "open the doors of our national community", and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo added the city was keen to support efforts to settle him in France.

"We can only thank him and thank heaven he was so reactive", she told Antenne Reunion radio late on Monday.
