Waco attorney speaks out on MSU settlement

  • Larry Nassar Survivors and Michigan State University announce they have successfully resolved existing litigation and agreed in principle to a $500 million global settlement

And that settlement will see victims of Larry Nassar's sexual abuse receive $500 million. The lawsuits, settled in mediation this week, allege that Michigan State and others neglected to protect 332 claimants from Nassar, 54, per ESPN.

Though the settlement is not yet finalized, the agreement - made by lawyers on behalf of 332 of the victims - was approved Tuesday by the university's trustees. The other defendants in the lawsuit were condemned for missing opportunities to put an end to Nassar's extensive abuse of young women at Michigan State.

Nassar, who had worked as a doctor for the USA Gymnastics federation and also served at an on-campus clinic at Michigan State, earlier this year received a prison sentence of up to 175 years after pleading guilty last year to criminal sexual conduct.

MSU said that $425 million will.

The MSU board issued a separate statement in which it apologized to the victims and their families, while also acknowledging the "need for change on our campus and in our community around sexual assault awareness and prevention".

Nassar was accused of molesting girls and women as a doctor at Michigan State and for USA Gymnastics, which is still facing a suit over the abuse. After serving that sentence, he will serve two sentences - one that's 40 to 175 years and another that's 40 to 125 years - in two MI counties for a total of 10 sexual assault charges.

Numerous survivors said in their statements MSU and other gymnastics authorities got wind of the assaults in the late '90s, but no actions were taken against Nassar. In that sense, Michigan State is dropping the ball. The school ultimately sided with Nassar, concluding that his "pelvic floor" treatments were medically appropriate. Nassar's former boss, William Strampel, was arrested in March for failing to monitor Nassar despite repeated warnings to do so - not to mention accusations of sexual assault of his own - and Kathie Klages resigned after the former Spartans gymnastics coach was suspended for defending Nassar. In 2014 the university's investigation of allegations against Nassar turned up empty. Any suggestion that the university engaged in a coverup is "simply false", a school statement said. The school has also cut ties with former president Lou Anna Simon and former athletic director Mark Hollis as a result of the Nassar scandal. John Engler, the former MI governor, was named the interim president by the board of trustees. Today's settlement is an important step forward and we must continue working to change the culture at MSU to ensure this never happens again. "That being said, my investigation is still open and ongoing", said Bill Forsyth, the special prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Bill Schuette to investigate how Nassar's abuse went on for years.
