Tester and Bullock support Senate's net neutrality vote, Daines votes against

  • Sen. Maggie Hassan hears from employees of Stonyfield Farms and members of New England's farming community about how the repeal of net neutrality rules would affect their business

Despite the influence from big cable and telecommunications companies who have poured oceans of money in their attempt to kill net neutrality rules, the Senate stood on the side of the American people in voting to pass this resolution.

Three Republican senators joined their Democratic colleagues to pass a measure that would preserve Net Neutrality in the United Sates.

Senate supporters of the FCC rules put forward the legislation under the Congressional Review Act, a law that permits Congress to revisit - and reject - decisions by administrative agencies within a certain window of their approval.

Independent of the Senate action today, several states including Washington, Oregon, California and NY, have either proposed net neutrality-like legislation or sought to take legal action to nullify the FCC repeal.

"They know they won't ultimately be successful, but they want to campaign on their desire to add new regulations to the internet", said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Tech companies and consumers decried the commission's action as a major reshaping of the internet, because it would allow broadband providers to create fast lanes for websites that pay to make sure their content gets priority delivery. The battle over these rules were heated and partisan, the final FCC vote for repeal was 3-2, along party lines.

"These are the policies that every American benefits from and it enables our modern economy", Doyle said at a press conference after the Senate passed a bill reinstating net neutrality. Broadband providers support the general precepts of Net Neutrality including transparency, no blocking, and no unreasonable discrimination. It is unclear if net neutrality still holds the same interest that set off nationwide protests in December when the FCC, led by a Trump appointee, dismantled the rules.

Mark Farrell, mayor of San Francisco, took to Twitter before the vote to urge people to call their congressional representatives and ask them to support the resolution.

The Senate voted to overturn the FCC's repeal of net neutrality on Wednesday afternoon, but experts say the measure faces a tough road ahead.

Burlington Telecom vowed in December to remain committed to net neutrality practices despite the federal change. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska; Susan Collins, R-Maine; and John Kennedy, R-La. However, she said, in many places, consumers do not have multiple providers to choose from.

Republicans countered that the rules are heavy-handed and an example of government overregulation, and they accused Democrats of using the issue to fire up young voters ahead of this fall's elections. "Net neutrality protected everyone ... that era, the era of an open Internet, will unfortunately soon come to an end".
