82 women including Kristen Stewart, Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek walked the red carpet to protest the number of female directors selected by Cannes i.e. 82 as compared with more than 1600 male directors since 1946.

This is not the first time that the red-carpet dress code has come under scrutiny for being controversial.

Stewart was protesting against Cannes Film Festival's infamous and widely criticized heels-only rule for women. However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, festival director Thierry Fremaux later said that the existence of a high heel policy was just a rumor.

However, the actress made a decision to Express discontent of the female dress code for the event, which requires to come to shoes with heels.


CANNES-The issue of high heels at Cannes has been a spiky one in recent years.

"It has become really obvious that if [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, 'Excuse me, young lady, you're not wearing heels". You can not come in.' Then (I'm going to say), 'Neither is my friend.

At the 2016 festival, Stewart told Vanity Fair that the "no flats" policy needed to change immediately. "It can work both ways". It's just like you simply can not ask me to do something that you are not asking him [to do]. "I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version, flats or heels".

They generally hit below the fashion belt with their regular and quite basic styles on the world's most revered red carpet event next to the Met Galas'. She even cracked a small smile while rocking her stilettos. After strutting down the red carpet in a attractive silver dress, she stopped midway and removed her heels and chose to walk up the stairs barefoot.
