The men had driven their auto into the police yard before getting out to stage the attack, Setyo Wasisto, national police spokesman, told a briefing.

At least one journalist and two police officers were reportedly injured in the alleged attack.

The driver of the van then attempted to the flee the scene, hitting and killing one police officer, he added.

The attacks have put Indonesia on edge - and sparked a string of foreign government travel advisories - as the world's biggest Muslim-majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.

Dozens of suspects have been rounded up in raids since Sunday's attacks, while several militants, including the number two ranking leader of the Surabaya JAD chapter, had been shot and killed, police said.

It is said to be the deadliest since the 2002 Bali attack.

The attack follows a prison riot in Jakarta, suicide bombings in three churches in Surabaya city, the provincial capital of East Java.

Just hours after the church bombings, a further three people in another family were killed and two wounded when another bomb exploded at an apartment complex about 30km from Surabaya.

All six bombers were killed, including the mother who was Indonesia's first known female suicide bomber.

A suicide bombing was also reported at the city's police headquarters on Monday when bike-borne attackers blew themselves up at the checkpoint to the precinct.

The police shot two of them, Doddy said.

The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed the attack via its news outlet.

Police have said the church and earlier police station attacks were motivated by the arrest of JAD leaders, including jailed radical Aman Abdurrahman.
