  • Palestinian medics evacuate a wounded youth during a protest at the Gaza Strip's border with Israel

The inauguration comes five months after President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The 2012 candidate spoke Sunday at a Jewish-Christian Bible study session in Israel's parliament.

Israel says it only opens fire when necessary to stop infiltrations, attacks and damage to the border fence, while accusing Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the blockaded Gaza Strip, of seeking to use the protests as cover to carry out violence.

Since late March, 42 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli army fire and over 1,700 other wounded in border unrest. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.

Her visit comes as the USA moves its embassy to Jerusalem this week.

Only two countries, Guatemala and Paraguay, have said they will follow the USA lead. "Today's move of the US embassy gives life to a religious conflict instead of a dignified peace".

He called on other countries to follow the U.S. move, saying that "in any peace that you could possibly imagine, Jerusalem will remain as Israel's capital". And the truth is that not only has Jerusalem been the capital of the Jewish people for millennia and the capital of our state from its inception.

"People have been waiting for 70 years for this to happen".

Speaking on the eve of the embassy opening, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was hopeful of success in efforts to end the decades-old conflict while National Security Advisor John Bolton said it should make peace "easier".

Dozens of foreign diplomats are expected, though many ambassadors of European nations who oppose the move will skip it. Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania have reportedly blocked a joint EU statement on the issue.

The Israeli military says its troops are defending the border and firing in accordance with the rules of engagement.

Israel's army said it would nearly double the number of troops surrounding the Gaza Strip and in the occupied West Bank.

Israel immediately annexed east Jerusalem - home to the city's most sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites - in a move that has not received worldwide recognition.

On Saturday Conricus said the rules of engagement had not been changed.

"Tragically, the USA administration has chosen to side with Israel's exclusivist claims over a city that has for centuries been sacred to all faiths", the general delegation of the Palestine Liberation Organisation to the United States said.

Pompeo said he was aware that there could be security concerns for United States embassies and citizens in the region in the coming days.

As is the case throughout the occupied West Bank, the expanding settlements are guarded by a constant Israeli military presence.

IDF Southern Command General Eyal Zamir met with the heads of Gaza Belt communities on Sunday evening to discuss the rising tensions on the border in advance of "Nakba Day" and the transfer of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

A reception on Sunday will include members of a delegation led by President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, his senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner and Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin.
