His previous best scores were 66s in 2000 and 2001 - also during the third round. Woods surged up the leaderboard with a seven-under-par 65 during round three.

"I hit a lot of good shots today", Woods said. "I birdied the first couple of holes, and I just kept it rolling from there". He needed just 27 putts, his fewest of the week.

But Woods birdied four of the first five holes en route to a 30 - his lowest score ever on the front side at TPC Sawgrass and one off the course record.

He pushed his drive into thick rough at the hard par-4 14th and ended up with his lone bogey of the day.

As his 36-hole score bounced around on both sides of the cut line late Friday afternoon, long after Woods left the premises in a tinted courtesy auto, whatever pre-Masters momentum he accrued at the other three PGA Tour stops in Florida seemed like a distant memory. He blasted to 8 feet but couldn't convert.

Woods missed a great chance to get back to nine under at the 16th as he misread a birdie putt from eight feet, and he safely negotiated the 17th in par before he drilled a sublime second to the rear fringe at the last. A 74 in Round 1 left me wondering if he was going to miss his fourth Players Championship weekend in a row, and now here he is contending for a top 10 and possibly the trophy. He just kind of had control of his golf ball. "His putting kind of speaks for itself, but from the 10- to 20-foot range, he was just so solid and rolled in some really nice putts today". "And I think even more so maybe with putting", Simpson said. "But I can assure you, for me it was goosebumps and shivers out there hearing all the noise and playing with him".

However, he allowed too much break with his 15-footer for birdie and settled for a 65 - the same score posted by Spieth earlier - with both eight under for the tournament and seven shots behind halfway leader Webb Simpson, who was still over an hour and a half away from his tee time when Woods holed out at 18. 7 and 9 and six more on the back including the final three holes.

And it was welcome, given his struggles here of late and this year in general. He went on to win his second Players championship that year.

"I think golf as a whole and sports as a whole, confidence is so big, and it can change the way you think".

"Today I felt more comfortable with my overall warm-up".

"It was nice. I made some putts today". It leads into the rest of the game.

"I finally got off to a good start".
