Hamburg's historic first relegation sees fans throw flares on pitch to protest

  • Hamburg CHAOS as Bundesliga side are relegated for the first time in 55 years

Hamburg have battled bravely against the drop in recent seasons - finishing 16th in both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons only to survive by winning relegation play-offs against Greuther Fürth and Karlsruhe respectively - but a chronic lack of goalscoring talent saw them finally perish on Saturday afternoon despite a 2-1 win at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

That feat defined the club and the fans took great pride in it. Violence broke out towards the end of the game, forcing the players off the pitch as police tried to control the situation.

Talk about creativity! The reason Gladbach fans came up with the idea is in relation to the fact Hamburg have had a clock banner around their stadium detailing how long they've been in the German top flight.

Stuttgart spoiled Bayern Munich's title party and Jupp Heynckes' last game in charge of the champions by producing a surprise 4-1 success at the Allianz Arena.

Freiburg secured its survival beating Augsburg 2-0.

Ruthless on the break, the visitors tore through Bayern, as Daniel Ginczek, Anastasios Donis and Chadrac Akolo all found the net on the counter-attack. Schalke had already wrapped up second place, but it was between Dortmund, Leverkusen and Hoffenheim for the remaining two spots.

Lucas Alario produced two classy strikes, and Julian Brandt one, before Hannover hit back through Niclas Fullkrug and Martin Harnik, meaning Bayer missed out on the Champions League due to their inferior goal difference to BVB.

Leverkusen instead are forced to settle for a place in the Europa League, along with Leipzig, whose 6-2 thumping of Hertha Berlin ultimately counted for little as the other results failed to go their way.

Elsewhere, Guido Burgstaller's bullet header saw Schalke edge Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 and Werder Bremen left it late to triumph 2-1 at Mainz, Theodor Gebre Selassie grabbing the victor after Florian Kainz had cancelled out Jean-Philippe Gbamin's opener.
