The Gaza Health Ministry says one Palestinian was killed and 49 were wounded by Israeli army fire in protests on the Gaza-Israel border. "The crossing will remain closed until the damage caused by the riots are repaired and will reopen in accordance with a situation assessment", the Israel Defense Forces said on Twitter, adding that Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman approved "the recommendation to close the crossing".

May 15 will also be a day of "confrontation" with the Israeli army "in all border areas", organizers said.

The Palestinian National Committee said it was "surprised by the non-delibrate and unfortunate incident that damaged property" at Kerem Shalom and called on Palestinians to preserve the crossings.

The largest blaze yet sparked by the firebomb-bearing kites happened Wednesday near Kibbutz Be'eri, an Israeli community located some seven kilometers (4.3 miles) east of Gaza's Bureij refugee camp.

"Hamas continues to pour vast resources into building tunnels and thwarts humanitarian efforts that allow Israel and other countries to help Gaza residents, instead of investing in developing the Strip", the IDF said in a statement Saturday.

In anticipation of the demonstrations this week, the army have begun reinforcing battalions along expected flash points in the Gaza Strip.

He also said "this is a message to Palestinians and Arab as well that he is punishing us and he doesn't care about our suffering", adding that they have identified over 140 events throughout the world over the next 3 days that are memorializing the day of Nakba and refusal over Trump's decision.

Ultimately, some 700,000 Palestinians fled their homes - or were forcibly expelled by invading Jewish forces - while hundreds of Palestinian villages and cities were razed to the ground.

The development brings the death toll of Friday's protests up to two. Hamas seeks an Islamic state in the entire historic Palestine, including what is now Israel, but has said it is ready for a long-term truce.

Lauded by many in Israel and seen as a unique achievement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the United States decision was received with hostility and rage in the Arab world, especially among the Palestinians who began "Days of Rage" to express their displeasure with the move.

"This really shows the cynicism of the Hamas terror organization toward the citizens they are supposed to care for", Conricus told reporters. Israel says it has acted to defend its border and has accused the protests of being directed by Hamas. A separate people crossing in northern Gaza remains open.

Egypt opens the crossing from time to time, mainly to allow people in special categories, including medical patients and Gaza residents studying overseas, to leave the territory or return to it.

Friday marked the seventh weekly border protest since late March.

Israel has said it will prevent any border breach and has stuck to its open-fire policies, such as targeting "main instigators" and those approaching the fence, despite growing global criticism.

The protest came just three days ahead of what the leader of Gaza's ruling Hamas group has said will be a march by tens of thousands who could burst through the border fence into Israel.
