Alonso: Top six still in 'another league'

  • Alonso & his future in F1

"Making it into Q3 for the first time this season feels fantastic, and if you combine that with the fact we are at our home grand prix, it's a double benefit". We are the only team completing the full four races with both cars. We saved them with a lot of points on Sundays with a little bit of luck and good races.

Alsono was, however, optimistic about his McLaren team, despite a disappointing start this year, and was keen to talk about his sustained motivation.

"It's a tall order to have the best auto in Formula 1 when you're racing against Ferrari and Mercedes and Red Bull". The top guys are still too high up so we need to close that gap, but I'm pleased that all the updates we brought here seem to be delivering as we expected.

The auto was not as fast as expected, especially in qualifying, and its top speeds were among the slowest on the grid.

The two-time world champion is splitting his time this year between his duties with McLaren and racing in the World Endurance Championship, where he competes for Toyota. "So it has been a very good start, in a way". Here, in the last five years, I did much better races than previously, even if I was not able to win the race. I will never probably do a race as I did in Baku and I finished seventh.

Alonso is highly regarded by all of the leading F1 drivers despite it being five years this weekend since he last won a Grand Prix.

Alonso reiterated his view that the auto he is racing this weekend should have been available for the start of the season in Australia. He barely made it back to the pits, arriving practically on two wheels, but gradually made his way back to the front to finish on the points for a fourth straight race.

"The biggest thing here is how predictable everything is", he said.

Alonso said his results in the endurance championship would not directly affect his decisions about his future in F1, although he did say he wasn't happy with the predictability of F1 these days. However, while not yet a cause for celebration, eighth and 11th positions on an aerodynamically-challenging track such as this mark our best qualifying session of the season so far, and is certainly the step forward we were hoping for on track to correlate with the evidence we saw in simulation. "The direction everything went is sad for formula one", Alonso said in Barcelona.
