France's President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday pressed German Chancellor Angela Merkel to move decisively and quickly on reforming the European Union, saying the bloc's biggest economy must look past its "fetish" for surpluses and bring about change at a critical juncture.

President Hassan Rouhani told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a phone conversation that his country has "always aspired to lower the tension in the region and strengthen security and stability".

"Reports about last night's Iranian attacks against Israeli army posts from inside Syria to which Israel responded by striking against Iranian targets in Syria are extremely worrying", the Spokesperson for the EU External Action Service said in a statement.

European leaders and Iran have said that they will seek to uphold the nuclear deal despite the withdrawal of the United States.

"Rather, Europe needs to take its fate into its own hands".

"Germany, France and Britain have decided that we will abide by the agreement, and we will do everything we can to see that Iran also abides by its responsibilities in the future", said Merkel.

Many major global conflicts are happening "at Europe's doorstep", said Dr Merkel, who expressed concern about the risk of war between Israel and Iran over Syria.

The 2015 deal, worked out by the United States, France and four other worldwide powers as well as Iran, eased sanctions in exchange for Tehran limiting its nuclear program. "Other powers. haven't kept their word", he added, without specifying the powerful countries he was referring to.

Mr Macron echoed Mrs Merkel's criticisms of the USA decision to leave the nuclear deal and said that Europe should show greater unity and strength to become the main guarantor of stability in the Middle East.
