Gina Haspel is too qualified to pass up

  • THERE'S A PATTERN HERE Gina Haspel nominee to be director of the CIA and Marc Short White House legislative affairs director arrive in Hart Building for meetings with Sen. Joe Manchin

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to take aim at John Kerry, endorse a cabinet nominee, and announce an worldwide phone call.

Haspel, a Central Intelligence Agency veteran of 33 years, in 2002 supervised a Central Intelligence Agency secret interrogation site in Thailand, where torture methods, including waterboarding, were used.

In the ad, CIA director nominee Gina Haspel is described as "a decorated intelligence officer admired by allies around the globe with bipartisan support".

He also said the American people would get a chance to hear from her directly at her confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

Then the president switched gears to announce that he would call President Xi of China to discuss trade and denuclearization in the Korean peninsula. He added that "in these very risky times, we have the most qualified person, a woman, who Democrats want OUT because she is too tough on terror".

Haspel, who is acting CIA director, had told the White House she didn't want to stay in contention if her bruising confirmation battle this week would jeopardize the agency.

She said the interrogations did not break laws, were authorized by the Justice Department and fully briefed to members of Congress. Senators including Rand Paul, R-Ky., say they won't support her. CIA veterans would also see her confirmation as a sign that the agency had been officially absolved of its misdeeds in the war on terror.

Lawmakers had complained that despite repeated requests the CIA has failed to declassify information about her more than 30-year undercover career at the agency.

"The reason you're seeing contingency planning isn't a lack of confidence in Gina, but because they're seeing the Democrats band together. they're anxious they're not going to have the votes, ' a former national security source told the network".

Haspel became deputy director of the agency in 2017 and was named last Tuesday as the replacement for Mike Pompeo, who was made secretary of state.

She has received robust backing from former intelligence, diplomatic, military and national security officials, who praise her extensive intelligence career. The news was first reported Sunday by The Washington Post.

Sanders told reporters Monday Haspel is "100%" committed to seeing her confirmation process through.

Trump has vented that his team isn't doing enough to prevent the kind of headwinds that Haspel and other Cabinet picks have faced in the Senate, according to one White House official.

"If Barack Obama had nominated her when he was president, she would have sailed through without question", attorney Debra Burlingame said on "Fox & Friends".

Haspel is facing opposition from some Democrats and many rights groups who are critical of her activities related to the shredding of 92 interrogation videotapes in 2005 and her stint as chief of base at a covert detention site in Thailand where two detainees were waterboarded, which simulates drowning.
