Italian Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) won the second stage in a row of the Giro D'Italia on Sunday's 229-kilometer (142-mile) race from Beersheba to Eilat.

The Giro d'Italia "Big Start" in Israel reached its climax in Israel on Sunday, as 175 riders from 22 teams raced toward the finish line in the southernmost city of Eilat.

This followed on from a Friday 9.7 kilometer individual time trial in Jerusalem and a Saturday 167 kilometer race that saw cyclists cover the distance from Tel Aviv to Haifa.

Bennett finished third on the stage, with Team EF Education First-Drapac rider Sacha Modolo second.

Race favourite Chris Froome finished safely in the peloton after a bunch sprint in the Mediterranean coastal resort of Tel Aviv.

The fourth stage will be held in Sicily (Catania - Calagione, 198 km). "For me, Israel has already won this race, as it afforded hundreds of millions of TV spectators to see our lovely country, and feel the warmth of our people, bearing witness that Israel is a diverse, open, free and safe country".

Dumoulin remains in second, one second behind Dennis with Portugal s Jose Goncalves up to third at 13sec after Belgian Victor Campenaerts lost time at the finish.

"Of course it's never nice to be at home during the Giro, especially after the Olympics because at that point in my career I wanted to concentrate on the road to really establish myself", he said.

Australian Rohan Dennis, of BMC Racing, took the race leader's pink jersey off reigning champion Tom Dumoulin. I've got a lot to learn still.

Mullen is the best of the Irish on the overall general classification in 46th position, 58 seconds off the lead, while Bennett is 64th, 14 seconds behind his compatriot.

The Giro has been warmly embraced in Israel. The Giro will end in Rome on May 27.

Dennis said the ride through the desert was not as hot as originally feared and that strong winds were the main obstacle as they went through the barren moonscape after passing by its famous craters.

"We knew that the second sprint was the one with bonus time and we thought that if it was within grasp, and the breakaway wasn't too far away, we would try". "Israelis are the greatest fans in the world".

The peloton seemed relaxed as it departed Be'er Sheva with a trio managing to escape pretty easily consisting of Guillaume Boivin (Israel Cycling Academy), Enrico Barbin (Bardiani-CSF) and Marco Frapporti (Androni-Sidermec).

Riders will now transfer to Italy tomorrow, following the controversial Big Start in Israel.
