Seven other labourers perished in another incident caused by a mudslide in a mine in the Surrange area, some 60 kilometres east of Quetta.

A government official says a methane gas explosion in a coal mine has killed at least six miners in southwest Pakistan.

Now rescue is trying to find other people who could be under the rubble.

The roof caved in following the blast triggered by the accumulation of methane gas, killing 16 miners, Deputy Commissioner Farrukh Atique.

According to local media, about 25 people were in the mine when the explosion occurred. All the injured miners were rescued and taken to the hospital. Their bodies were later recovered after hours-long rescue operation.

Most of the miners came from the same village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Shangla district, officials told Pakistan's Dawn newspaper.

Chief of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Muhammad Tariq also confirmed that 16 miners had been killed.

Two bodies had been recovered and several injured labourers were evacuated on Saturday.

The mines are mostly owned by state-run Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, which leases many of them to private contractors.

Meanwhile, activists of the Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation (PMCLF) staged a demonstration outside Quetta Press Club on Sunday to protest against the killing of 23 miners in the two mine incidents.

Seven miners were killed after a mine collapsed in similar circumstances at Spin Carez.
