"If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border", Sessions said, in typically severe remarks.

Sessions held a news conference with Thomas D. Homan, deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and discussed "the immigration enforcement actions" of President Donald Trump's administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the US will take a stricter stance on illegal crossings at the Mexico border by separating parents from children, rather than keeping them together in detention centers.

In one recent example of how the policy works, a woman who is suspected by the Justice Department of being part of the migrant caravan that was caught in a group north of the border was charged with illegal entry to the United States and separated from the four young children who were with her. "If you're smuggling a child, then we are going to prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you, probably, as required by law".

Immigration advocates have said that separations of children from parents have been happening for months.

Last week, Sessions announced that the Justice Department was sending 35 assistant USA attorneys to the southwestern border to to "prosecute illegal entries into our country", while 18 immigration judges would focus "full time" on clearing a backlog of asylum claims. "Attorney General Sessions continues to abuse his authority to expedite removals and deprive detained immigrants of legal counseling and due process, which further highlights this administration's hostility towards immigrant communities".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is expected to speak at 3 p.m., Central Time, Monday in San Diego near the U.S. border with Mexico.

In April, Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" policy in which illegal entrants to the United States would be prosecuted in federal court.

Individuals who cross illegally will no longer be apprehended and simply bused back over the border without charges, as the Border Patrol has done in the past, especially for people without criminal records or prior immigration violations.
