Residents have demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari's government urgently deploy more police and military to protect vulnerable villages on the state border with Zamfara.

The death toll in last Saturday's armed attack on Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna state, has increased with the latest figure being put at 58, as more bodies were evacuated from Gwaska.

There is speculation that the attackers belong to a gang of thieves of cattle.

The killings in Birnin Gwari are regrettable.

He said: "Yes, 45 people were confirmed dead and as we speak the state command has already deployed 150 policemen to the area to provide security".

Children under the age of 10 were killed in the attack, according to the BBC.

Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris confirmed the bandits invaded the village of Gwaska Saturday, fighting local defence forces protecting the Birnin Gwari local government area, a community of about 3,000 people.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna has described the killing of 27 persons in Birnin Gwari Emirate of the state as "unfortunate".

"The Kaduna State Government has received with sadness reports of the murder of our citizens by bandits in Birnin Gwari".

A statement by the Birnin-Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance said: "So far, about 45 dead bodies were evacuated by the fearless vigilantes and volunteers, numbering 500, with the assistance of a handful of soldiers this afternoon (yesterday)".

The latest attack occurred barely a week after 14 local miners were massacred by gunmen at Janruwa community also in Birnin-Gwari local government area of the State.

At least 45 bodies were recovered from the fields of Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna province in northern Nigeria.

Also, a social media message by members of the community, under the aegis of Birnin-Gwari for Security and Good Governance, corroborated the claim by the source.
