  • Libyan militants kill election officials in storming of Tripoli election office

At least 12 people were killed when attackers stormed the building and set fire to it. Malefactors acted together: two of them were able to put in action an improvised bomb, and the third destroyed the Libyan security forces. Her group has underlined how elections will be hard while Libya remains dominated by a patchwork of armed groups who continue extra-judicial killings, property confiscation, forced disappearances, arbitrary detention and torture.

Observers believe the group might carry out similar attacks to deter Libyans from holding elections.

The attack in the capital Tripoli is the worst in years and reflects the challenges security forces face in rooting out militants who seized footholds in Libya amid the chaos that followed the 2011 ouster of Muammar Gaddafi.

"We stand with all Libyans in the fight against terrorism and remain committed to working with the Government of National Accord to deny ISIS any safe haven in their country", the State Department said". Islamic extremists are opposed to democratic elections and have targeted them in other countries.

Meanwhile the head of election commission, Emad Sayeh, has said although there was a big explosion in the building, the database for the election is safe and protected in a secure area. United Nations envoys have repeatedly emphsised the need for elections this year.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and reaffirmed the UN's commitment to the plan to restore peace to Libya, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Sayah told reporters that the database of the commission, which has registered almost 1 million new voters across Libya, had not been damaged.
