  • Vet accused of stitching heroin into bellies of Labrador puppies, who later died

A Colombian drug trafficker who twisted his skills as a veterinarian to turn innocent pooches into veritable drug mules was hauled into federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday - where prosecutors revealed how he cruelly sewed heroin into the stomachs of live Labrador pups.

They were then exported to the United States with the smugglers hoping the dogs' pedigrees would help ease their path through customs, the US Drug Enforcement Administration has said. When the dogs arrived in the U.S. the packages were surgically removed.

The New York Times said three of the dogs later died as a result of infections.

The traffickers cut open the puppies and implanted the heroin packets into their bellies, the court heard.

A raid in Colombia in 2005 found 10 dogs who were rescued, were used as drug couriers, but numerous puppies died in the operation.

"Dogs are mans" best friend and, as the defendant is about to learn, we are drug dealers' worst enemy'.

Per Fox News, Andres Lopez Elorza, 38, was arrested in Spain in 2015 after us authorities accused him of implanting liquid heroin into puppies' stomachs so they could be flown into NY.

According to the New York Post, Elorza's arrest was in connection with a raid of a vet clinic he ran in Colombia.

Andres Lopez Elorza is pictured in this undated photo released by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Donna, a basset hound, is one of the dogs that was saved by a National Police of Colombia (CNP) officer and his family.

Elorez was arrested in Spain and extraditied to the United States.

His court-appointed lawyer told Magistrate Marilyn Go that Elorza had "certain psychiatric issues" as well as some kidney problems. "I think a lot of it is stress related".

U.S. officials say Elorez was part of a Colombian-based conspiracy from September 2004 to January 2005 that smuggled heroin into the United States using various methods to hide the narcotics from detection.
