A severe dust storm followed by thundershowers hit parts of the northern Indian states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, killing as many as 70 people and injuring dozens.

Sharma said the department had issued warnings in the last couple of days about a dust storm in Rajasthan. Officials fear that the number of casualties may go up.

"As per the latest figures received, 64 people were killed and 47 injured in the dust storm in different parts of the state", Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said. Many reportedly died in their sleep while the storm swept through their homes.

"Most of the 35 deaths and 205 injuries across our state were from three districts Alwar, Dholpur and Bharatpur", Gera told AFP. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 36 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively", the weatherman said.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje directed the officials on Thursday to help the injured.

Shivam Lohia, who owns a resort hotel in Alwar district of Rajasthan, said he abandoned his auto on the road and ran for his life after it was nearly blown away.

Huge damage to life and property was reported during the storm.

State Disaster Management Minister Gulabchand Kataria called an emergency meeting and confirmed that 16 persons were killed in Bharatpur, 10 in Dhaulpur and five in Alwar.

Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said he was cancelling his birthday celebration on Thursday.

There were primarily four reasons that lead to the thunderstorm - excessive heating, availability of moisture, instability in atmosphere and a trigger for the storm, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Additional Director General Mritunjay Mohapatra said. Winds gushing at a speed of 120 kilometres per hour affected the power supply of the city.
