Vikings exercise CB Waynes' 5th-year option

  • Will the University of Pittsburgh's Brian O'Neill left be able to step in and immediately help the Vikings' offensive line? Much of the 2018 roster

We wrote last season about Terence Newman's impact on the Vikings.

The team announced it has exercised its fifth-year option on the former Michigan State cornerback, who started all 16 games for the first time in his four-year career in 2017.

Waynes was named First Team All-Big Ten while playing at MSU in 2014. The nickel corner, who can also play some safety, played in all 16 games for Minnesota last season and started in seven of those. I am just going to go out and do the same things I've always done. You have to wonder, though, if Zimmer would allow Waynes to do that on his own, that sounds more like something Zimmer coached him to do as opposed to something he was doing repeatedly while being coached to NOT do that. The 2003 first-round pick will be the seventh-oldest player in the National Football League next season and the second-oldest positional player, behind only Tom Brady, who turns 41 in August. They took Mike Hughes out of UCF in the first round (No. 30 overall) and also added Holton Hill as an undrafted free agent.

Waynes has a future in this defensive backfield, especially if the 25-year-old continues to improve at the rate he has through three years. Waynes became a full-time starter for the Vikings at the corner position in 2017 where he ended his year with 57 tackles and two interceptions.

Newman will be 40 when the 2018 season begins.
