  • An Excessively Stanky Fruit Has Caused A Mass Evacuation In Melbourne

An Australian university library was evacuated after a rotting fruit was mistaken for a gas leak.

After a comprehensive search, firefighters identified the smell was not chemical gas, but gas generated from a durian, which had been left rotting in a cupboard. In a sense, it was still a gas leak.

In Australia, approximately 500 students and teachers were evacuated from Melbourne's RMIT university on Saturday, after a "smell of gas" was reported within the library.

The fire brigade said the building stored potentially unsafe chemicals, triggering an investigation into the source of the smell.

Durian is known as the King of Fruits for its formidable thorny exterior and strong odour and the smell is sufficiently pungent that the fruit is banned from some hotels and public transport. However, there is nothing appetizing about the fruit; from its hard shell and rotting smell, not many would dare try a durian. The Smithsonian magazine compared the smell to "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock".

In a statement titled "Rotten afternoon on campus", the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said firefighters gave the "all clear" after the smelly fruit was located and removed. It is used in numerous Southeast Asian recipes.

However, Victoria state's Environment Protection Authority still had the task of removing the foul-smelling fruit from the premises, according to The Age.
