According to Gaza Health Ministry, the Israeli soldiers opened fire from across the border on protesters.

Al Jazeera's reported that "Thousands of people stood right at the border, then we heard the Israeli forces opening live fire".

Among the wounded, 178 suffered gunshot injuries, according to Gaza health officials, and two remain in critical condition.

"The nature of these injuries shows that Israeli soldiers are using high-velocity military weapons created to cause maximum harm to Palestinian protesters that do not pose imminent threat to them", an Amnesty report noted.

Israel says it is protecting its borders and takes such action only when protesters, some hurling stones and rolling burning tires, come too close to the border fence.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein called the loss of life deplorable and said a "staggering number" of injuries had been caused by live ammunition.

"Given the scale of the ongoing crisis, Amnesty re-iterates its calls for all governments to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on all sides to this conflict", he said.

ReutersA demonstrator hurls back a tear gas canister fired by Israeli troops during clashes at a protest where Palestinians demand the right to return to their homeland, at the Israel-Gaza border in the southern Gaza Strip, April 27, 2018.

Gaza Strip was shaken by seven weeks of clashes in the summer of 2014 between Israeli forces and Palestinians.

The Israeli military accused Gaza's Hamas leaders of orchestrating what it called a "serious and irregular" attack and said it would not tolerate similar activity in the future. The organizers have said the demonstrations will go on until mid-May. The group reportedly used innocent Palestinian women and children as human shields, while they cowered behind them.

A 15-year-old Palestinian boy succumbed to his wounds Saturday from IDF gunfire in the fifth straight week of protests in the Gaza Strip on Friday, bringing yesterday's death toll to four.

Israel and Hamas, a militant group sworn to Israel's destruction, are bitter enemies that have fought three wars since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007.

The Great March of Return movement is officially scheduled to continue until May 15, known as Nakba Day, marking the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the creation of Israel.

More than 10,000 people were protesting when soldiers shot live ammunition and tear gas into crowds, Reuters reported.

Israel and the United States have long had a close relationship, with the United States being Israel's biggest ally, and the connections between the two nations could deepen following Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel - a move that was widely criticized within the global community.

Citing protesters armed with "wire cutters, hooks and winches", the Times quotes Lt. Colonel Jonathon Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, who describes the peaceful protests as "the first time we've seen this kind of synchronized and focused attack on the fence". It is hard to see how tire-burning or stone-throwing, or even Molotov-cocktails thrown from a significant distance at heavily protected security forces in defensive positions can be seen to constitute such threat. The Israel military said it executed "rules of engagement" to keep people from gaining entry. The blockade has gutted Gaza's economy.
