And, in the modern game, it wasn't about to scare off National Football League teams.

The Dolphins on Saturday used their fourth-round pick (No. 131 overall) on running back Kalen Ballage out of Arizona State.

"It's one of the most exciting moments in my life", Gesicki said on a conference call with Miami reporters.

"I just kept my faith", Fitzpatrick said to ESPN in reference to Hurricane Irene, which struck his home in Old Bridge in 2011.

Smythe is the 19th Notre Dame player selected in the top four rounds of the NFL Draft since 2012.

If you like athleticism at the tight end position, Gesicki is your guy.

"The one thing everyone talks about is him not being a great blocker", Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said.

A superlative leaper with soft hands, the book on Gesicki describes him as more of a super-sized wideout than a classic tight end.

"Every kid says that coming out, and we'll see, but we're very excited to have him".

Ballage measured at 6-foot-2 and 228 pounds during the NFL Combine, where he also ran a 4.46 40-yard dash. Derby, MarQueis Gray, Thomas Duarte and recently signed Gavin Escobar.

"The 6'6" Gesicki is the highest Penn State tight end selected in the NFL Draft since Kyle Brady was taken 9th overall by the Jets in 1995.

His success came in his junior and senior seasons after a hard sophomore year where he struggled with drops.

The Dolphins finally addressed it in the third round with Baker after picking Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in the first round, and Penn State tight end Mike Gesicki in the second round. Even at the next level, he will pose a matchup problem with his ability to high-point the ball and outleap his defenders.

Earlier this week Gesicki joined fellow Nittany Lions, Saquon Barkley and DaeSean Hamilton as Nike athletes. Hamilton is likely the next off the board for Penn State with a host of other players not far behind.
