  • Kono calls for framework to aid Syria

"If there is any country to be held accountable for its destructive role in the region, that is the government of USA", said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the joint presser with his Turkish and Russian counterparts.

Sergey Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, has accused the USA of trying to divide Syria while ignoring worldwide law by launching missiles into the country.

Zarif said he will meet his Russian Federation and Turkish counterparts to press on with the Astana and Sochi peace negotiations, particularly after the recent U.S. military attack on Syria that hampered the political settlement of conflicts.

They agreed to hold the next International Meeting on Syria in Astana in May 2018, it added.

The talks in Astana have been going on in tandem with another series of talks held in Geneva, brokered by the UN.

Russian Federation and Iran are the Syrian government's backers, while Turkey supports militants fighting to bring down the government.

Meanwhile, Russia says the attack was staged to discredit its ally President Bashar-al Assad and this week brought a group of Syrians to the global chemical arms watchdog to back its claims.

The conflict in Syria has killed more than 350,000 people since it began in 2011. The next are set for May 14.

Russia, Iran and Turkey are the guarantor states in the so-called "Astana process" aimed at ending the violence in Syria.

Global aid groups have repeatedly accused the Syrian government, which is closely allied with Russian Federation and Iran, of preventing the delivery of aid to besieged, rebel-held areas.

Mr Lavrov reiterated Russia's contention that the chemical weapons attack was an "artificial pretext" for the missile strikes by the US, Britain and France.

"Today, the U.S. supports terrorist organisations, and this has to stop", Mr Cavusoglu said.
