Intelligence officials in the Middle East suspect that Dr. Fadi Mohammad al-Batash was targeted as part of a Mossad operation to obstruct the Hamas terrorist group's advanced weapons program, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

Malaysian police said Wednesday that they believe the two men suspected in Batash's murder entered Malaysia on false documents in late January and are still in the country, though their nationalities and where they traveled from remain unknown. Police said security video showed that the suspects had waited for him for nearly 20 minutes.

Mossad has been accused of several high-profile killings involving Palestinians around the world, although Israel has consistently denied the accusations.

Authorities had originally released computer-generated photographs of the suspects, who witnesses described as well-built and light-skinned, possibly Middle Eastern or European.

Batsh had been sent to Malaysia, where he was gunned down on April 21, to study and acquire weapons systems and drones for Hamas, which runs the coastal enclave of Gaza, as the Mossad suspects Hamas has an increased interest in advancing its unmanned aerial and underwater vehicles for attacks against Israel, the intelligence officials claim.

"We believe the duo are still in the country and those who have information can contact the police", NST quoted the Inspector-General as saying.

Al-Batsh's body was released to his family yesterday and taken to a surau, where dozens of people mourned his death at a funeral ceremony.

Palestinian mourners carry the body of Palestinian journalist Ahmad Abu Hussein at a hospital in Beit Lahia in the northern of Gaza Strip, who was shot two weeks ago by Israeli forces as he was covering demonstrations on the Gaza border, after he succumbed to his injuries on April 25, 2018.

Al-Batsh's body was brought to Gaza after crossing the Egyptian border earlier on Thursday, after Malaysia and Egypt arranged the return.
