"We will be talking about many things, including how the USA has been treated unfairly for many years, by many countries, on trade", Trump tweeted ahead of the meeting. -China trade war - the countries have proposed tariffs on each other's products - which could have a significant impact on Apple and other USA companies.

The meeting is set for 1:45 p.m. Washington time and will be closed to the press, according to a schedule released by the White House that offered no hint about what the two men might discuss. Trump recently announced $50 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, prompting Beijing to retaliate.

Apple has not returned a request for comment about Wednesday's meeting.

After a rocky start during his election campaign, when Trump urged his supporters to boycott Apple and criticised the company for making its products in China, Cook has become one of his favourite go-to CEOs. Cook has long called for the U.S.to slash corporate taxes and the tech giant responded to the new law by agreeing to repatriate most of its $252 billion in overseas cash back to the U.S.

USA and Chinese officials have been working to resolve the dispute.

Cook, an Alabama native, was among the 125 attendees for Trump's first state dinner Tuesday night, when the President and First Lady hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.

China is a key market for Apple as it is for many other companies.

Trump has a tense relationship with the USA technology industry, based in Democratic strongholds such as California's Silicon Valley and Seattle.

Sanders said in response to a question that Trump would be "open" to meeting with Amazon.com chief executive Jeff Bezos, who the president has repeatedly criticised. Cook also came out against what some viewed as a muted reaction to the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August, and against some of the administration's immigration policies - specifically its position on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Trump also met with Microsoft founder Bill Gates last month.
