  • Crime scene investigators enter home of Meredith Chapman after murder-suicide on Monday night in Radnor

Sometime before 7 p.m. Monday, Radnor Township, Pennsylvania, police said, Jennair Gerardot of Wilmington, Del., broke into the home of a former University of DE communications official and waited for her to come home, then shot her once before turning the gun on herself.

Jennair Gerardot, 48, is suspected of fatally shooting 33-year-old Meredith Chapman, a former colleague of her husband, Mark Gerardot, with whom he was believed to have an affair with.

According to police, texts and emails sent to Mark indicated Jennair knew about the affair, and came up with the "calculated, planned attack" as a result.

Officials said this was a "thought-out plan" that likely involved Jennair Gerardot putting on a disguise and taking public transit from DE to break into Chapman's home and wait for her to return.

Police officers who were called Chapman's house on Monday found Gerardot in her driveway.

Authorities say the killings stemmed from an affair that Mark Gerardot, 49, had been having with Chapman, Philly.com reported.

The University of DE also released a statement: "Everyone who knew and worked with Meredith is heartbroken".

Police say Gerardot's husband, and Chapman lover, discovered their bodies. Her husband, Luke Chapman, was also involved in politics as a former Newark city councilman.

Police said Gerardot shot Chapman around 7 p.m. upon returning to her Radnor, Pennsylvania home Monday evening.

Chapman, a 2007 graduate of the University of DE, worked for the school in media relations and marketing and ran unsuccessfully for a state Senate seat in DE in 2016. My thoughts and prayers go out to Luke, to Meredith's family and friends, and to everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

"Our hearts are broken by the devastating loss of our new colleague, said Villanova spokesman Jonathan Gust in a statement Tuesday". She loved her family fiercely, was a compassionate friend and among the most talented and innovative professionals in her field.

Chapman unsuccessfully ran as a Republican against Democratic State Senator Dave Sokola in 2016. "May her light forever shine brightly as we commit to preserving her legacy by coming together to find common ground, lifting up our communities, and doing right by our neighbors". Last week, she started as assistant vice president of marketing and creative services at nearby Villanova University.

Hours before her death, Chapman, tweeted: "Couldn't be more excited ... just a week on the job and I'm already feeling the love from #NovaNation".

Gerardot had worked for the better part of five years for a South Carolina-based manufacturing company called Circor Instrumentation before moving north to Wilmington.

The couple lived and worked in IN, including together at Gerardot & Co., a branding & package design agency co-founded by Mark, until 2011.
