Rise & Shine: Pueblo teachers in District 60 vote to go on strike

  • Bill proposed jail for Colorado teachers who go on strike

Kerrie Dallman, president of the Colorado Education Association, said in a statement posted on the CEA's website that teachers must meet in the capital to show legislators that education is a priority.

After a shakeup of Kentucky's Board of Education last week, conservative groups are pushing for the state to intervene in the management of Jefferson County Public Schools, the state's largest school district.

Earlier this year, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association threatened to strike before backing off and continuing negotiations over that district's pay-for-performance system. Republicans want to secure more funding for transportation projects, and lawmakers are also arguing over the final form of a proposed overhaul to the public employees retirement system.

The bill would allow school districts to seek a court injunction against teacher strikes, according to The Hill.

STRIKE Friday, teachers in Pueblo's District 60 voted to go on strike following a school board decision not to accept a recommendation for salary increases.

Hundreds of teachers skipped school, marched across the Denver metro area and gathered at the state Capitol on Monday and Tuesday morning to get their message across: more funding for schools.

But on Tuesday, DPS said "due to significant anticipated teacher absences", it would cancel all classes Friday. The audit could include recommendations the state assume control of the district's operations.

Teacher strikes are rare in Colorado and already face certain restrictions. There's a 180-day remediation - a cooling off period - as an example of the terms teachers have to abide by before going on strike. A state judge refused to order teachers back to work because they had gone through the required process with state regulators. "It's probably most important the union that sponsors that strike be penalized", he said.

The bill that would punish some teachers for going on strike is getting a revision at the state Capitol. Teachers had the right, he ruled, to reject the proposed contract. Chalkbeat is a nonprofit news site covering educational change in public schools.

Lewis was appointed to the position last week after the ouster of former commissioner Stephen Pruitt, who had two years left on his four-year contract.
