David Davis does not ignore views of NI people: DUP

Britain has said that it will drop out of the EU single market and customs union after Brexit.

Last week the UK's Brexit negotiator, David Davis, cautioned that without a real idea of how the future trading relationship with the European Union would go, British parliament could reject any proposed Brexit deal.

Under questioning from Labour MP Pat McFadden, Mr Davis said he meant to bring "the best possible negotiated conclusion" to the House, adding: "We don't normally lay out what we'll do if we lose in votes as far as I'm aware".

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier says the United Kingdom must give Brussels a clear blueprint if negotiations are going to advance further.

Following a defeat in the House of Lords over the customs union vote after Brexit, the Prime Minister and her team are reported to be having a rethink.

The Prime Minister visited the Shropshire Star's sister paper the Express & Star at its Queen Street offices in Wolverhampton as part of a visit to the region, which also saw her stop off at Dudley firm Boss Design and meet Tory campaigners.

He is being questioned this morning by the Commons Exiting the European Union Committee.

She said: "I think anybody who has looked into this issue over the past year or so has seen that it is quite clear that there is no other place that we can go than to remain in a customs union with the European Union - nothing else makes sense".

"A customs union would change the dynamic between Britain and the EU".

The Brexit secretary said he made "himself available whenever possible" and would continue to do so.

Britain must give Brussels a clear Brexit blueprint to allow negotiations to move forward, the EU's chief negotiator has warned.

The newspaper reported that May's office believed Fox and Johnson would quit rather than accept staying in the European Union customs arrangement, but that other euroskeptics such as Gove would remain. "I think we have got to win that case and that is my determination".

The comments from Mr Barnier come after the PM suffered three defeats in one day on her Brexit plans.

But business leaders argue that leaving the customs union will severely damage cross-border trade, potentially result in new tariffs, and require burdensome checks on the origin of goods in transit.

"It's clear for all of us to see that the priorities of the UK Government lay with keeping their own cabinet happy and keeping criticism from the DUP to a minimum, not with protecting the rights and economic interests of people in Northern Ireland".
